Johnson injury mars victory

A SERIOUS head injury to Eric Johnson overshadowed Oldham St Annes' 16-14 victory over Wath Brow Hornets.

The scrum-half was taken to hospital following the second-half incident in a game that had started late after the visitors had been held up in heavy traffic.

Craig Johnstone's penalty put Hornets ahead before Saints replied with John Gillam's brace of tries and a Lee Forsythe conversion.

Stuart Sanderson crossed for Hornets, Johnstone goaling, before Dave Harris' try and Forsythe's conversion put Saints 16-8 ahead.

Sanderson's second try and Johnstone's goal ended the scoring, but there was still time for Gillam and Kevin Thompson to be sinbinned as tempers flared.

Saddleworth Rangers were beaten 13-10 by Shaw Cross Sharks.

Having trailed 6-0, Paul Ashton's try and Adam Kirwan's goal brought Rangers level before a try, penalty and drop goal put the Sharks 13-6 ahead.

Danny Attersall brought Rangers to within three points with a late try.

Seven tries in the final 20 minutes saw Higginshaw beaten 68-4 by a fast and skilful Pilkington Recs team in the Lancashire Cup.

Ryan O'Donnell scored all their points with two first-half penalties as Pilkington led 20-4 at the break.

However, Pilkington opened up the defence at will in the final quarter although Higginshaw never stopped trying.

Waterhead lost 28-2 at Bradford Dudley Hill, Kiel Lancashire kicking a penalty.
