Visitors given the Cane

THE rain almost spoiled the final Saturday of the Ashton and Oldham Cricket Alliance league season with critical games taking place in division two.

Eventually, it was Greengate who overhauled Newtonhurst to take top spot and the championship.

They did so by defeating Cane Studios in a match reduced to 20 overs.

Cane batted first and were all out for 32 off the last ball, giving Greengate the opportunity of taking maximum points as Clarke took 5-5.

He then hit an unbeaten 25, steering Greengate to full points and the championship as they ended on 33-3.

Elsewhere, Newtonhurst were entertaining Friends in a game reduced to 23 overs.

The visitors batted first and were dismissed in the penultimate over for 130 after good contributions from Nadeem (43), Qasim (35) and Imran (34) with Courtney (3-33) the best of the Newtonhurst attack.

Leaders Newtonhurst then struggled against the Friends attack, Nadeem taking 3-9 as they were 65-9 at the close with Friends taking five points and Newtonhurst one.

All of the other games were abandoned without a ball being bowled, each team taking home two points in the process.

This Saturday sees the Shield semi-finals taking place with Newtonhurst entertaining Jay Hind and Bharat playing Europa Exiles.
