Glodwick crowned as new champions

GLODWICK clinched the Oldham and District Table Tennis League division one title despite losing their 100 per cent record against second-placed Aerospace A.

Last year's champions Werneth A remained in third spot after an emphatic 9-1 defeat of Uppermill A, while Aerospace B moved away from the relegation places thanks to a 6-4 victory at Hyde YMCA A.

Hollinwood C stayed in deep relegation trouble after going down 8-2 against Rosehill A whose B side lost 7-3 to Honeywell Lane A.

The mid-table match between Hollinwood A and Werneth B ended in a 5-5 draw and the other game saw OTTC A get the better of Hollinwood B.

Werneth C kept top spot in division two by way of a 7-3 victory against Pennine, staying ahead of Unison A who were 9-1 winners against their B team.

Grotton A closed to within three points of Unison thanks to a 6-4 win over Coldhurst A, Uppermill B whitewashed First Transport, while the remaining game saw Hollinwood D prevail 7-3 in their mid-table encounter against Hyde YMCA B.

Gilders A stayed on course to lift the division three crown after an 8-2 defeat of Werneth D.

Unison C moved ahead of Werneth and into second place after beating their D side 8-2, while fourth-placed Grotton B were 7-3 winners against Honeywell Lane D.

The other games saw Gilders B stay at the foot of the table after losing 6-4 to Coldhurst B, but they are level on points with Failsworth C who were whitewashed by Honeywell Lane C.

Coldhurst D were confirmed as champions of division four after they recorded an 8-2 victory against Honeywell Lane G.

Uppermill C remained firm favourites for promotion by defeating third-placed Honeywell Lane F 8-2, while Saddleworth moved into fourth place courtesy of an emphatic 9-1 victory against OTTC B.

Failsworth F and Coldhurst E remained fifth and sixth after Failsworth emerged 6-4 victors.

The Oldham Vets team of Dave Buckley, Tommy Ryan and Ken Hayes narrowly lost to Halton 5-3 in the final of the Dennis Smith Inter League Trophy.

Appearing in their third consecutive final, they were unable to repeat the win of two years ago.
