When hoit seats became hotter
27/12/2006
IT WAS the year when being either a football manager or a rugby
league coach in the borough was one of the most precarious jobs
available.
John Sheridan replaced Ronnie Moore and became Latics' sixth
manager in six years after one point from 18 scuppered their hopes
of a play-off spot.
Elsewhere, John Pendlebury walked out on the Roughyeds and Steve
Deakin took over, only to see them create their own piece of
unwanted history with 18 defeats in 18 league games.
With that in mind, it is probably fair to say that 2006 was not
one of the most memorable sporting years ever to hit the
borough.
However, this is how we covered it.....
January
A MIXED month for Latics with defeats against Nottingham
Forest and Blackpool and a draw with Southend United, allied to
wins over Gillingham and MK Dons.
Elsewhere, fans' favourite David Eyres is told he can go out
on loan with Carlisle United rumoured as a possible
destination.
The Roughyeds prepare for the 2006 season by losing 42-8 to
Rochdale Hornets in the Law Cup before defeating a Leeds Rhinos
Academy side 16-8.
February
LEE Grant arrives at Oldham Athletic on loan until the end of
the season as Chris Killen completes an acrimonious switch to
Hibernian.
On the pitch, a run of three consecutive defeats ends with a
draw at AFC Bournemouth, while there are wins over Nottingham
Forest and Walsall.
The Roughyeds' Northern Rail Cup season starts with losses
against Rochdale Hornets and Halifax, the former seeing Ged
Corcoran suffer a serious facial injury.
March
A TURBULENT start to the month for the Roughyeds who, having
defeated Keighley Cougars, see John Pendlebury resign after three
games as coach.
Steve Deakin replaces Pendlebury and guides the club to
victory against Saddleworth Rangers in the Powergen Challenge
Cup.
Ronnie Moore targets seven wins from the final 11 matches as
Latics seek a place in the League One play-offs.
April
HAVING earned themselves a place in the top six with a draw at
Hartlepool, Latics take two points from five games during the month
as Ronnie Moore questions whether his players want to win promotion
to the Championship or not.
The LHF Healthplan National League One season kicks off with
Oldham considered 100/1 shots to win the title - they lose all
three of their league games, plus the Challenge Cup tie at Barrow
during the month.
Crompton are the only winners as the 2006 Lake Garage CLL
season gets under way.
May
A MONTH of departures at Boundary Park after a last-day 1-1
draw with Scunthorpe United as David Eyres and Lee Grant are the
first of a summer exodus.
It is a similarly depressing month for the Roughyeds as
numerous injury problems see them lose every game they play despite
signing David Best and Matty Bottom.
Oldham St Annes lose their National Conference League
elimination play-off, going down 26-12 to Thornhill Trojans.
June
RONNIE Moore leaves Boundary Park on the first day of the
month to be replaced by John Sheridan, Tommy Wright taking the
assistant manager's job.
Les Pogliacomi and Gary McDonald sign on at Boundary Park,
although Richard Butcher and Terrell Forbes are told they can
leave.
Roughyeds coach Steve Deakin claims only 'a miracle' will keep
them from relegation as they are comprehensively beaten by Hull KR
and York City Knights.
July
ROUGHYEDS owners Chris Hamilton and Sean Whitehead reveal the
club lost over £100,000 by playing the 2002 season at Ashton United
in a warts and all summary of their accounts.
Things are not much better on the pitch as a narrow loss to
Rochdale Hornets is followed by defeats against Widnes Vikings and
Batley Bulldogs.
Gareth Owen departs Oldham Athletic for a season-long loan at
Stockport County, but Craig Rocastle agrees a two-year deal.
August
RELEGATION is confirmed for the Roughyeds after they are
beaten 58-6 at Halifax, although they are given a boost when Latics
agree to halve their rent for the final three home league games of
the campaign.
Latics' League One season starts with defeats against Millwall
and Port Vale, but Maheta Molango gives them their first win
against Swansea City.
Chris Atherton's innings of 60 ensures Woodhouses win the
Walkden Cup with a two-wicket victory over Prestwich.
September
THE Roughyeds announce they will be staying at Boundary Park
for the 2007 season after reaching agreement on a sliding scale
rent.
However, they end the season with 18 defeats from as many
games, the final defeat at Whitehaven missed by the AWOL trio of
Chris Maye, Tom Kilgannon and Matt Bottom.
Latics' season begins to take off with four wins and two draws
during the month, Chris Porter's brace seeing them victorious at
Nottingham Forest.
Woodhouses' season-long quest for the JW Lees Lancashire
County League title ends when they are beaten by eventual champions
Denton St Lawrence on the final day.
October
STEVE Deakin continues Oldham's squad-building for 2007 with
the signings of Said Tamghart, Simeon Hoyle, Stuart Oldham, Ben
Woods, Geno Costin, Drew Houston, Mark Ogden and Richard
Mervill.
Latics only suffer one defeat during the month, going down 1-0
at Yeovil Town, beating Brentford and drawing with Doncaster Rovers
and Leyton Orient.
November
KETTERING Town push Latics all the way before John Sheridan's
men win their FA Cup tie 4-3, a week after exiting the Johnstone's
Paint Trophy against Chesterfield.
However, wins against Cheltenham Town, Bradford City and
Huddersfield Town send Latics into the top six in a month when the
owners deny claims that they have agreed to sell the club.
The Roughyeds sign Kris Smith, Michael Stout and Andy Crabtree
from Swinton Lions.
December
JOHN Sheridan is named League One manager of the month for
Latics' November exploits, while the club are drawn at Wolves in
the FA Cup after victory at King's Lynn.
The Roughyeds' fixtures for 2007 are published and see them
open their Northern Rail Cup campaign with a home tie against
Rochdale Hornets on February 11.
