Schools still in hunt

20/12/2006

SADDLEWORTH and Counthill schools are keeping the borough's hopes of rugby league silverware alive after the regional quarter-final draw was made for the boys' national Champions School Tournament.

In year seven, Saddleworth have been drawn at Barrow and South Lakes representatives Dowdales, while Counthill's year nines will play either St Helens' Cowley School or Widnes' Fairfield School.

As for the year 10s, Counthill must beat Wigan's Abraham Guest to set up a tie against the Great Sankey school from Warrington.

The RFL's North West regional development officer Matt Birkett said: "School children across the region are competing for the chance to become some of the first people to play rugby league on the new Wembley turf. What a fantastic finale this will be for such a prestigious competition."

The finals of the 2007 Champion Schools Tournament will be played on August 24-25 in London, the weekend of the Challenge Cup Final, at the new Wembley Stadium.
