Harriers’ Sam is the Heaton highlight

OLDHAM and Royton Harriers' athletes travelled to Heaton Park for the third race in the South East Lancs Cross Country League.

The highlight of the day was the under-17s boys' four-mile event where Sam Witter led the team to first place, finishing second in his race in 16:32, ahead of James Witter (eighth, 18:14) and Mark Mannings (ninth, 19:33).

The under-11s girls also finished second thanks to Ella Clarkson (sixth, 7:10), Leyla Bramall (seventh, 7:13), Shelby McTaggart (eighth, 7:17) and Lucy Kershaw (14th, 7:53).

In the under-11s boys race Joseph Guy was sixth in 6:46, ahead of Nathan Hilditch (eighth, 7:08) and J Fitzpatrick (11th, 7:21) as they ended in third place.

Fourth place went to the under-13s girls after runs from Sofi Clark (16th, 19:44), Amy Taylor (20th, 20:56), L Copeland (21st, 21:38) and Alex Hart (25th, 22:29). The boys race saw Josh Donald sixth in 14:27.

The under-15s girls race saw Emily Crompton finish in 19:52, followed by Natalie Mannings (20:58), while the ladies race saw Julie Peters finish eighth (31:03) and Pam Hudson 30th (36:32).

The senior men's six-mile race saw Rob Ingham finish fifth in 36:50, ahead of Mike Mannings (29th, 41:02), John Hudson (34th, 41:16), Dave Smith (35th, 41:22) and Brian Schofield (60th, 45:08).

  • ROYTON Road Runners members have been competing in various races at home and abroad.

David Smith completed the New York Marathon in 4:30.39, while Colin Green ran the Chicago event in 3:37.13.

Elsewhere, Steve Shaw ran the Snowdonia race in 3:37.32 and Jeff Cordwell ended the Leicester competition in 4:13.15.

Stuart Carroll (39:55), Neil Dickinson (41:12), Richard Higgs (45:58) and Robert Kellett (50:28) all competed in the Accrington 10k road race. Barry Greaves (39:10) and Rob Bickerstaffe (47:16) took part in the Barnsley 10k event.

Steve Shaw and Louise Gilchrist had times of 69:32 and 80:57 respectively when they ran the Preston 10-mile race, while June Allingan raised £1,700 for charity when competing in the Great North Run.
