Taking second spot

18/10/2006

DIGGLE'S first team went second in the Huddersfield League table with a game in hand on leaders Heywood Sports after winning 3-1 at struggling Honley.

While the margin of the victory suggested a pleasant afternoon's work, that was not the case as a mixture of dogged defending and jittery strike play almost left the local side empty-handed.

Diggle began complacently which contributed heavily to them going a goal down on 20 minutes by way of Honley's shot of the game - a 25-yard free-kick.

That shocked Diggle into action, but it seemed that the harder they tried, the less likely they were to score as a series of moves suffered through a total absence of ideas or composure in the final third.

However, they got back on level terms when Neil Rennie fired in a 25-yard free-kick after Paul Cullington was upended.

The goal seemed to clear Diggle's heads and they quickly added two further Gareth Goddard goals, both from the penalty spot after Danny Tomlinson and Keiron Mayall were fouled.

Diggle's seconds continued their march to the top of their division with a comfortable 4-2 win over Berry Brow.
