Hard fought Wooldale win

11/10/2006

DIGGLE'S first team came away with another win, but they were made to fight all the way before recording their 2-1 victory against Wooldale Wanderers.

Wooldale played to their physical strengths and pumped the ball forward at every opportunity, but while rarely threatening, their direct style was a real learning curve for the local side.

Diggle found Wooldale's experienced defence to be as cagey as they were physically strong as the first half ended goalless.

However, all that was to change as Diggle were two goals up within 10 minutes of the restart.

The first came when Keiron Mayall zipped past two defenders before cutting inside and squaring the ball to Neil Rennie who coolly slotted home from eight yards.

Diggle then doubled their lead soon after when Paul Cullington's superb run from midfield saw him one-on-one with the keeper, dispatching the ball in fine style.

Despite carving out several good attacking situations, Diggle's lead was halved when Wooldale pulled a goal back with the local side claiming offside.

They quickly regained their composure and saw Mayall, Edwards and Matley go close, only for Wooldale to come within inches of an equaliser late on when a header clipped the bar.

The reserves won 7-1 at Slaithwaite, while the thirds were 4-3 winners over Scholes.
