WATERHEAD withstood a very late fightback as they recorded a nailbiting 28-24 victory against Normanton Knights.

Tries from Carl Sneyd and Paul Joyce gave them an 8-0 lead at half-time, only for converted tries from Dale Atkinson and Andrew Ellis to give the Knights a 12-8 advantage on 48 minutes.

However, four tries in 19 minutes looked to have given Waterhead victory as Matthew Barran, David Norcross, Terry Fitzgerald and Paul Bennett all crossed, Sneyd kicking two conversions.

It was missed goal kicks that let Normanton back into the game to create a nervy finish.

Liam Atkinson and Chris Woolford crossed for tries goaled by Michael Hill, but Waterhead were able to ride out the final four minutes.
