Champions beaten on the opening day

THE start of the new Oldham and District Table Tennis League season saw some notable results.
Division one champions Werneth A went down 8-2 against a Glodwick side containing England's number four-ranked player Andrew Rushton, while there were 7-3 victories for Uppermill A and Hollinwood A against Honeywell Lane A and Hollinwood C respectively.
In division two, world championship veteran Harry Ross won three times as Hollinwood E drew 5-5 with Failsworth A, while there were 9-1 wins for Unison A and Honeywell B over Pennine and Hollinwood D respectively.
Division three saw a close game between Coldhurst's B and C teams, the latter eventually prevailing 6-4.
The other games saw Honeywell D see off Unison B 8-2, the score by which Failsworth C beat Saddleworth St Raphaels, while Failsworth's B side saw off Gilders B 9-1.
With a number of new players in competitive action for the first time, there were no close results in division four as Coldhurst D and E, Failsworth E and Owls B all won 10-0, while there were 9-1 scorelines for Uppermill C and Werneth F.
