Diggle hold champions

DIGGLE FC's first team continued its encouraging start to their Huddersfield League season, recording a 1-1 draw at defending champions Heywood Sports.

The visitors began brightly and enjoyed the best of the first half, although clear chances were few and far between for both sides.

However, Diggle did manage to break the deadlock when Gareth Goddard cut in from the left-hand side to score from a narrow angle with a shot into the far corner.

A long-range goal on the hour brought the sides level, but it was Diggle who continued to have the better of the play with Goddard, Matley and Edwards prominent.

Although the pace of the game got to Diggle, they were full value for the point.

Elsewhere Diggle's third team defeated visiting Netherton 2-1.

• TWO second-half goals saw Royton Town go down 2-1 in their Manchester League match against Irlam.

Town took the lead five minutes before half-time through Lee Higginbottom's volley, only for goals on 70 and 80 minutes to give Irlam victory.

The seconds drew their game 1-1, while the youth team lost 4-2 to Roach Dynamos.
