Mourning deaths of duo

26/ 7/2006

THE borough's rugby community is in mourning after two rugby league stalwarts passed away with 24 hours of each other.

Fred Laughton, the man who put the likes of Paul Sculthorpe, Iestyn Harris, Kevin Sinfield and Barrie McDermott on their path into the sport was found dead at his Waterhead home on Saturday morning. The 58-year-old former St Augustine's teacher had only retired the day before.

The day after saw the death of Oldham Service Area chairman Don Yates, who died at the Royal Oldham Hospital after losing his battle with leukaemia.

He was a lifelong Roughyeds supporter and enthusiastic about the sport at amateur and grassroots level - not only was he the Oldham Service Area chairman, but he also represented that body on the board of supporters' group Rugby Oldham.
