Set for final flourish

WOODHOUSES will contest this year's JW Lees Lancashire County Cricket League final against Prestwich after victory against Irlam in last Sunday's semi-final.

The Medlock Road side dismissed their opponents for 184, thanks mainly to Chris Atherton who returned figures of 4-25.

In reply, Alan Starmer made 50 and John Seary 42 as Woodhouses secured a four-wicket win, finishing on 185-6.

They face Prestwich in the final after they defeated Denton by 95 runs, Mike Hudson (58) and Steve Davis (53) making half-centuries in their 225-9.

Although Modi Ali compiled 50 for Denton, they were all out for 130 as Oliver Holt took 4-23.

Saturday had seen Woodhouses capitalise on defeats for the top three by moving into second place in the league table, four points behind leaders Denton.

Atherton made a half-century as Woodhouses reached 297-8 against Stand, for whom Trent Scott hit 71 as they ended on 231-8.

Action in the Lake Garage Central Lancashire League saw Oldham take the derby honours by way of a 76-run victory over Crompton at The Pollards.

Batting first, Oldham lost Dane Fletcher with only a single on the board.

However, that saw Mark Charlton come to the crease and inspire his side to victory with an innings of 119.

He had half-century partnerships with Marnus Maritz (19) and Imran Aslam (23) before he was the last man out as Oldham made 236-7 despite Simon Wright's 4-41.

In reply, Crompton slumped to 29-3 and 121-7 before they were all out for 160, Charlton taking 4-41 to cap a fine afternoon's work, while Crompton's Craig Williams hit 91.

It was a victorious day elsewhere for the borough's other CLL outfits as Werneth beat Unsworth by five wickets, reaching 228-5 in reply to Unsworth's 227 all out.

The other game saw Royton compile 267-6, Saeed Anwar with 127, before restricting Clifton to 259-6.
