Harriers athletes swoop on impressive medal haul

OLDHAM and Royton Harriers' athletes had a great weekend at the Greater Manchester Track and Field Championships as they came away with 15 medals and five golds.

Mike Rigby led the way, taking a hat-trick of throwing golds in the hammer (33.8m), discus (31.33m) and the shot put (11.42m).

Emily Shaw won gold in both sprints with times of 12.4s in the 100m and 24.4s in the 200m.

Also in the throws, Melanie Lee took silver in the hammer with a personal best and new club record of 30.35m, while Mike Ashworth took silver in the shot put with 9.32m and silver in the discus with 22.80m.

Mike Mannings took silver in the under-20s 800m race in 2:10.9, while Ryan Thompson ran 27.1s for second in the 200m.

David Hurst picked up silver in the 200m in 23.1s and also took bronze in the 100m in 11.3s.

Sam Witter set a new personal best to finish third in the 1,500m in 4:28.7, Thomas Milnes ran well for bronze in the 200m in 27.4s, and Vicky Robinson was third in her 200m with 27.3s.

There were also good runs from Lorna Hill with 5:19.5 in the 1,500m and 2:34 in the 800m, Mel Turner ran the 100m in 13.7s and the 400m in 62.9s, Aiden Gilmore finished the 100m in 11.6s and Thomas Milnes in a time of 13.89s.

Adam Arthurs set two new personal bests with 4:42.7 in the 1,500m and 2:13.3 in the 800m, Rick Mather ran 53.1s for the 400m and 24.2s in the 200m, while Sam Witter took almost four seconds off his 800m best with 2:08.8.

Mike Mannings ran the 1,500m in 4:33.1, Laura Wrench reached the final of the under-17s 100m with 13.4s, while Hollie Cummings was fourth in her 200m heat in 29.4s.
