Sofi sets example to team-mates

OLDHAM and Royton Harriers' youngest athletes put on a great team show in the third race of the South East Lancashire Cross Country League at Heaton Park.

The under-11s girls team are third overall with one race remaining thanks to good runs by Sofi Clark (10th, 11:07), Ella Clarkson (11th, 11:09), Annabelle Memory (12th, 11:15), Emma Peters (13th, 11:22), Francesca Connolly (14th, 11:28), Shelby McTaggert (18th, 11:40), Leyla Bramall (22nd, 11:54) and S Whitworth (23rd, 12:00).

The boys' team were fourth on the day, led home by Jack Crabtree (seventh, 9:27), Matthew Mankarious (19th, 10:45), Joe Guy (21st, 11:05), Christopher Marshall (23rd, 11:26) and Christian Durr (25th, 11:57).

Michael Smith again took first place in the under-13s boys race in 12:18, while Natalie Mannings was 20th in the girls race with 17:12.

Her brother Mike was fifth in the under-17s race in 17:19 with Katie Keeley third with 19:03 in the girls' race.

The under-15s boys' team were third overall with good runs from Sam Witter (sixth, 16:20), Mark Mannings (10th, 17:39), Ben Coltas (15th, 18:58) and Mark Marshall (16th, 19:04). Lorna Hill was sixth in 18:33 and Jessica Clarkson 13th with 20:19 for the girls.

The senior ladies were fifth on the day, led home by Louise Clarkson (21st, 32:38), Sara Bott (24th, 33:19) and Charlotte Ashton (28th, 33:46), while Brian Clarkson was 65th in 43:04 in the men's race.

The seniors also finished fourth when they competed in the Salford Women's five mile road race.

Louise Clarkson was 22nd place in 38:27, followed by Sara Bott (42nd, 40:29), Charlotte Ashton (53rd, 41:35) and Jodie Fairbrother (64th, 42:39).
