Harriers’ flying start

OLDHAM and Royton Harriers' young athletes had a great start in the South East Lancashire Cross Country League at Leigh.

The under-11s boys race saw Jack Crabtree fifth in 5:03, followed by Matthew Mankarious (16th, 5:30) and Chris Marshall (22nd, 5:53).

In the girls' race, L Bramall was ninth (5:52), accompanied by Sophi Clark (12th, 5:58), Ella Clarkson (16th, 6:05), A Memory (19th, 6:12) and Francesca Connolly (20th, 6:16).

Michael Smith won the under-13s boys race in 8:53, while Sam Witter (fifth, 10:32), Mark Mannings (12th, 11:55), Ben Coltas (14th, 12:23) and Mark Marshall (15th, 12:31) were third overall in the under-15s category.

Jessica Clarkson was 12th in the girls' race with 13:14, Grace Atherton was ninth in the under-17s race with 22:41, while Mike Mannings was eighth in the men's equivalent with 17:54.

Louise Clarkson (20th, 28:12), Sara Bott (25th, 29:05) and Charlotte Ashton (36th, 30:36) saw the senior ladies to ninth spot.

Reece Hendley was sixth in the under-20s in 34:02, Andy Martin was seventh in the men's race with 31:25, followed by Rob Ingham (19th, 32:56) and Brian Schofield (78th, 36:21).
