Five-star display sends Springhead through to next round

SPRINGHEAD progressed to the second round of the Gilgryst Cup with an easy 5-2 home win.

It was a case of ex-Royton players holding all the aces in the pack throughout the game.

Danny Taylor crossed for brother Carl to open the scoring on nine minutes with a great header, while a corner allowed another ex-Town player Paul Kirwan to score 10 minutes later.

By now, Springhead threatening to run riot and a quick free-kick allowed Bobby Fulham to score a third.

It did not end there with Carl Taylor outpacing the Town defence on 26 minutes to easily score his second.

With Town in grave danger of buckling, a brilliant free-kick from Chris Mackay on the stroke of half-time brought Town back into the game.

The second half was an anti-climax for Springhead with them playing as if the match was over.

Although Town continued to battle, they never really threatened Springhead and it was left to Fulham to claim his second on 84 minutes.

Town claimed a second goal on 89 minutes with a second Mackay goal, but it was too little too late.

Town's reserves registered their first win of the season with a 4-2 win at home to Walshaw Sports.

Andy Eastwood scored twice with Danny Hicks and an own goal completing the scoring.

Danny Edwards-Jones scored a hat-trick as the youth team beat Bury Amateurs 6-2, skipper Pete Illingworth adding a brace and Jamie Peers the other.
