Heartbreak for Saints

A LAST-MINUTE try saw Oldham St Anne's go down to a 39-38 defeat at Thornhill on Saturday.

The hosts' eighth try of a pulsating afternoon's rugby proved one bridge too far for an Oldham side who crossed the whitewash six times themselves.

Fullback Gary Rafferty scored twice for Saints with their other tries coming via Chris Carter, Eric Johnson, Chris Worth and Michael Deakin.

Saints had trailed 22-12 at half-time and then 36-35 before Kiel Lancashire's seventh goal put them three points clear.

However, the last play of the match saw the Trojans march up the wing to score a try in the corner.

Despite a gutsy display at Ovenden, Waterhead lost their third game in three this season as they went down 26-10.

With Peter Pearson leading from the front, Waterhead played some fluent rugby which saw two Ryan Collins goals give them a 4-2 lead.

However, the first of Richard Pearson's hat-trick of tries - goaled by Chris Hartley - saw the hosts lead 10-4 at the break.

The second half saw Waterhead fall away, unable to contain Richard Pearson as he scored another two tries and Hartley added another.

Peter Pearson capped his man-of-the-match display with a late try, goaled by Collins.

The A side exited the Tetleys Lancashire County Cup with a 58-6 second round defeat at Bold Miners.

Waterhead's B side completed a miserable day with a 26-18 defeat against York Grove in the Pennine League's fifth division.

Hollinwood slumped to the biggest defeat in their history in going down 86-0 at Morley Borough on Saturday.

With only 11 fit players, several carrying injuries from the week before and some not showing up, Hollinwood saw their youngsters give their all.
