Saints raid Oulton

24/ 8/2005

OLDHAM St Anne's got their National Conference League Premier Division season off to a perfect start to the new season with a 36-22 win at Oulton Raiders.

Within four minutes, Danny Tyrrell split the Oulton defence with a converted try before Garry Rafferty soon dived over for a second try, Tyrrell again adding the extras.

Raiders then gifted Saints a penalty goal when Billy Kershaw was sin binned for holding down in the tackle, before Dave Harris sent John Gillam over.

Tyrrell's kick from the touchline made it 20-0, but Oulton replied with two converted tries before half-time through Danny Stanley and Chris Dunhill.

Saints were given a fright within two minutes of the restart when Oulton second-rower Nicky Leckenby scored in the corner and Stanley's goal cut the gap to two points.

However, they settled down and ran in four further tries through Richard Badby, Chris Carter, Harris and a second for Gillam. Substitute Steve McGreavey scored a late try for the home side.
