Squires’ Seniors service

15/ 6/2005

OLDHAM Golf Club legend Alan Squires showed his battling qualities in the English Seniors' Championship, which was staged at Prestbury.

Only recently into senior ranks, Squires made a poor start in the championships but came back well to eventually finish third, four shots behind winner Roy Smethurst, of Crewe, who won the title for an unprecedented fourth time.

But Squires did enough to keep him firmly in the frame for more honours at national level.

Oldham's junior team also showed great battling qualities with a magnificent win in the Manchester Alliance Williams BMW Junior Team Challenge over Shaw Hill who have been national junior champions in recent years and frequent finalists in the event.

Despite losing two games without hitting a ball as they were two players short Oldham, led by junior captain Jamie Dickinson, stormed back with wins for Jamie Callum Coogan, Lee Melia and Tom Gott taking them to a 4/3 win.

The Centenary Trophy for Oldham's ladies went to Liz Johnson with a 36-hole total of 132.

Saddleworth Ladies' hopes of success in the MDLGA Bell Cup were ended at Sandiway as a powerful home team, containing some county players, proved too strong and they won 7-0.

LGU action at Crompton and Royton saw Val Hall win with 69.
