Heywood hit by semi-final defeat

CROMPTON and Royton's Lancashire County star Karen Heywood gave a great account of herself in the Lancashire Ladies championships at Fleetwood.

Having progressed through the qualifying strokeplay competition to reach the top 16 players she was then involved in the matchplay rounds in the top flight.

After beating A Bromelow 5/4, Karen found herself up against one of the stars of the future in reigning England under-13s champion Kelly Tidy.

She beat Tidy on the final hole before losing her semi-final 5/4 to eventual winner Corisande Lee.

Karen's efforts have ensured her a place in the Lancashire team to play in the Northern Counties Championships at West Lancashire next month.

A long handicap at Crompton and Royton saw RF Denson prevail with a 91-20-71 tally.

Dr Brooks won a medal competition with a score of 83-15-68.

Oldham ladies were also in jubilant mood after winning their latest National Mail on Sunday knockout match.

Playing at home Oldham were 4.5-1.5 winners with their team winners being Sheila Antrobus, Bev Mercer, Karen Phanco with Mary Buckley halving her match.

Stephen and Brian Squires won a four-ball betterball medal at Oldham on a cpo from Cliff Nield and John Stringer after both shot 64.

Sunday's second round of presidents event was won by Graham Foulkes on a cpo from Tom leatherhead after both recorded 63s.

Saddleworth's Sue Knebel is another player on the victory trail after recording a pair of impressive wins.

The first came in an LGU medal with her nett 74 winning a cpo against Joan Simpson, before she won Mrs Clegg's Trophy, posting 95-21-74 to win by a shot from Lynne Hallas.
