Derby day disaster

4/ 5/2005

THE weekend CLL action saw Royton defeated by Werneth at the Paddock on Sunday.

After a soggy opening thanks to Saturday's heavy rain, Royton were put into bat but quickly lost Anthony Percy and Neil Broom to Alan Durose and Stuart Moore respectively.

However, Lee Gibbons' 48 appeared to put Royton back on track before he was caught on the boundary.

He was given good support by Mark Woodward who made 37 before he was caught behind.

A cameo knock from Paul Hughes took Royton to 149-8 which must have given them some hope of victory.

Those hopes were soon dashed by former Lancashire and Delph man Darren Shadford who blazed away from the start.

Although he was dismissed by Dion Taljard, Werneth saw Durose take centre stage by compiling an undefeated 42 to take Werneth to victory.

Elsewhere, Oldham lost by six wickets against Walsden on Sunday.

Batting first, Oldham reached 145-6 mainly thanks to 45 from Mark Charlton.

In reply, Walsden reached their victory target with four wickets down, although Martin Smith took 3-52.

The only local side not in action was Crompton who saw both their weekend games rained off.

  • RAIN ruined the opening day of the newly-formed Ashton and Oldham Cricket Alliance League.

Only two games managed to beat the showers as all other fixtures were cancelled because of waterlogged grounds.

Of those games which did take place, Bharat took four points against Levenshulme Cavaliers, while Cane Studios beat Radclyffe I by 10 wickets.
