SADDLEWORTH Golf Club's new lady captain Jenny Knight held a drive-in ceremony with a difference.

Her plans had appeared to have been scuppered after an emergency operation for appendicitis a few days before the event was due.

However, she made it to the first tee with the help of captain John Gates and president Steve Dervan to perform a unique 'putt-in' ceremony.

The first round draw for the Manchester Alliance Dunham Forest Trophy has thrown-up a mouth-watering local tie as Oldham entertain Saddleworth for a place in the last 32.

Former Saddleworth assistant pro Richard Heginbotham will relish the match against his former boss Robert Johnson as Oldham look to maintain a proud home record in the region's premier men's team competition.

Other matches see Crompton and Royton at Chapel-en-le-Frith, Brookdale host Deane, and Werneth entertain Mellor and Townscliffe.

A singles Stableford at Saddleworth was won by Barbara Shuttleworth with an impressive 47 points.

There was further good scoring at Saddleworth as Bernard Woodhead and Harry Wrigley won the Ladcastle Trophy qualifier with 49 points.

Junior members were in the prizes at Oldham as junior captain Jamie Dickinson partnered Joe William to a betterball Stableford victory with 46 points, while Jack Brennan's 61 led the way in a monthly medal.

Team medal action at Crompton and Royton saw Andy Frizzell, Damien Harrison, Alistair Cameron and Rob Hogarth first past the post with a winning 126.

Mike Allen and Sam Gilby won a five-club challenge at Oldham Golf Club with 43 points.
