Mercer’s fears

OLDHAM coach Gary Mercer has admitted his side's pre-season preparations are behind schedule.

The Kiwi was disappointed by the Roughyeds' showing at the Shay where an under-strength pack toiled to keep Halifax at bay in a 34-12 defeat.

Mercer said: "We're definitely behind where we would like to be in our preparations but I'm not going to use that as an excuse. We are rebuilding and it's a process that takes time.

"Danny Nanyn and Paul Norman busted away all day but we had nothing on the bench to replace them.

"Halifax are well-equipped with six or seven props and I only have two available at the moment, but I'm not panicking. It's funny to read that some people are writing us off now and saying we're relegation fodder. I will just use that as an extra driver and motivator with the guys."
