LAST year's BARLA National Cup beaten finalists Saints strolled to an easy victory over CMS Yorkshire League side Upton on Saturday.

They ran in nine tries at Higginshaw Road after a frantic opening that saw both sides concede nine penalties in as many minutes and second-rower Andy Sands sin-binned for an alleged high tackle.

But that didn't affect the Oldham side as both Keiran Deakin and Anthony Platt crossed for tries converted by Danny Tyrrell.

Deakin then helped set-up the first of Paul Garrett's hat-trick on the half hour and, straight from the restart, Phil Russell put centre David Harris through for another converted try.

Upton capitalised on a rare error from Kevin Fitzpatrick to reduce the arrears two minutes before the break, winger Phil Rowan notching what would prove to be their only success of the afternoon.

Saints started the second half with a dazzling spell of three tries in 10 minutes. Fitzpatrick was first over, finishing an inside ball from Garrett with Tyrrell adding the extras.

John Gillam then chased down Richard Badby's kick to cross in the corner before David Best and Dave Sweeney set up another try for Garrett who completed his hat-trick two minutes later.

And Saints rounded off the scoring when loose forward and man of the match Chris Worth sent Fitzpatrick in for Tyrrell to land his fifth goal of the afternoon and seal a comprehensive win.

• EXCELLENT teamwork was the base for Saints' under-11s to defeat Leigh Miners Rangers 28-18.

Connor Dowd scored a try from a move off the training ground, Connor Grady added another while Kendal Davies scored another two.

Bradley Quinlan, Jack Tindall, Nathan Hughes and Mick Nield kicked the goals.
