Rangers are the Standard bearers

5/ 1/2005

Saddleworth Rangers 24
Rochdale Mayfield 18

SADDLEWORTH Rangers stormed into the Standard Cup final with a brilliant second-half display to defeat Rochdale Mayfield 24-18.

They had trailed 12-0 after just eight minutes at Hollinwood before Mayfield star man Steve Gartland withdrew with a hip injury and the tables were turned.

Two tries for winger Ryan Moores and one for centre Danny Corrigan helped Rangers haul the scores level at 18-18 with just 10 minutes left.

Then Ward Jones produced a try-saving tackle, sparking the winning score as Johnny Horton fed second rower Matthew Bottom to outpace the Mayfield defence and confirmed a stunning fightback.

  • A DATE and venue for the other semi-final - Oldham St Anne's against Waterhead - is yet to be announced.
