Quality the key for 'Super' aim
29/12/2004
OLDHAM have once again used coach Gary Mercer's South Sea connections to capture Cook Island International Tere Glassie.
The 27-year-old prop forward has been playing his most recent rugby in Australia and actually turned out against Oldham for South Sydney when they toured Britain in 2000.
Oldham boss Gary Mercer was again given a recommendation to sign Glassie from Cook Islands coach and former teammate Kevin Iro.
Roughyeds chairman Chris Hamilton is delighted that, following the signings of Simon Haughton and last year's top scorer Nick Johnson, Oldham have managed to land another top-quality player in their bid to win promotion into Super League.
He said: "Again there was Super League interest but Tere has decided to sign for us, which goes to show that people are impressed by what we are trying to achieve at this club. We have made a lot of effort to only sign excellent players and Tere is a good example of that.
"I'm delighted with the quality we are attracting and that will hopefully put us in a good position to make a push for the Super League next season."
Mr Hamilton also revealed that Academy player James Kirkland has signed on as a member of the senior squad for next season.
Meanwhile, he says the club has heard nothing about the Law Cup game at Rochdale being in doubt due to the possibility of Hornets being booted out of Spotland.
Rochdale Hornets are tenants at the home of Rochdale FC and a row over rent has led to speculation they may not be able to play the game against Oldham scheduled for January 9.
Mr Hamilton said: "I still expect the game to go ahead and we will be preparing as normal until told otherwise. Rochdale haven't contacted us but if they have a problem that is nothing to do with us so it's business as usual as far as we are concerned."
