Melling keeps up his good form

GARY Melling, the GMWN Trophy champion, returned to Crompton and Royton following his triumph at Reddish Vale to win another top trophy.

Partnering Paul Gidley, the three-handicapper won the fourball matchplay championship with a 2/1 final win over David Hewitt and Rick Sweet.

Ray Griffiths was also celebrating after beating Brian Smithies in the singles matchplay final by 2/1 to win the Highfield Cup.

Saddleworth lady captain Pam Griffiths and Sonia Dunn will represent their club in the national Daily Mail Foursomes competition in 2005 after winning their club qualifier.

They posted a nett 74 in difficult conditions to finish ahead of Eileen Moores and the consistent Hazel Rogerson (76.5).

Local players were out in force as Prestwich assistant pro Mark Pearson enjoyed a double in the Manchester Alliance fixture at Wychwood Park.

Pearson, the leading assistant in the Order of Merit last season, took the top individual pro prize with 37 points and completed his double by winning the pro-am with Prestwick partner Alan Walker on 41 points.

Next in were the Brookdale 'old firm' of Tony Cuppello and Arthur Tattershall with 40.

Leigh duo Peter Chesworth and Dave Rowland posted the best card of the day as they won the am-am with 44 points.
