Chadderton’s fine first day

CHADDERTON began their Moore and Co Solicitors North West Counties Football League campaign with a fine 3-2 victory at Cheadle Town.

They were given the ideal start when Papy Saiba's 24th minute header gave them the lead.

Stewart Mellor doubled the advantage shortly afterwards before an unmarked Darren Gallagher made it 3-0 just after half-time.

Town keeper Troy Whittle kept his team in the game with a penalty save before his side began their fightback with 11 minutes left as Scott Flanagan scored with a header.

Although he added a second on 84 minutes, Chadderton held on to take the points.

At Whitebank Road, Oldham Town began their season with a 1-1 draw against Flixton.

The visitors had taken a 19th minute lead through Robert Kelly but the match exploded into life just before half-time when Town were awarded a penalty after keeper Phlip Daly was adjudged to have fouled Les Cathcart.

Daly, along with Ryan Gilligan and their manager, was sent off in the aftermath of the incident, which saw Darren Scanlon equalise from the spot.
