LATICS strolled to a second convincing pre-season victory at North West Counties League favourites Newcastle Town.

Brian Talbot again fielded two different line-ups but his charges still comfortably bossed both halves at The Lyme Valley Stadium.

Despite a sluggish-looking surface, the front pair of Rodney Jack and Jermaine Johnson caught the eye in the opening period and combined smartly when Latics took the lead with a well-executed move on 16 minutes.

Full-back Marc Tierney's ball from the left found Johnson and he quickly fed the advancing Jack who drilled a crisp shot low into the bottom right corner from just inside the box.

Shots from Mark Bonner, Ernie Cooksey and Johnson were not far away from extending the lead while the hosts offered just one long-range effort from Daryl Wilkes in response.

Talbot made nine changes at half-time and Latics doubled their advantage within seconds of the restart.

Scott Vernon fired a shot in from the right and Rob Cooper could only parry for Chris Killen to stab in.

Vernon then got in on the scoring act himself, adding the third on 66 minutes when David Eyres' cross gave him the opportunity to spin and fire home.

Vernon then went close again with a thumping header before trialist goalkeeper Kelvin Jack had the last word.

The Trinidadian did his contract prospects no harm with the save of the night to deflect a fierce drive from Adam Beasley.
