MONARCH Ju Jitsu club entered the eighth Irish Cup in Dublin and returned with a glittering haul of 24 medals.

Nine students and instructors travelled for the international karate and ju jitsu contest and picked up seven gold, seven silver and ten bronze medals - a major achievement considering it was the first time any of the students had competed.

Monarch students won medals in demonstration ju jitsu, junior grappling, ju jitsu sparring, veterans' karate sparring and kata.

Keith Turner, chief instructor, said: "All the students did extremely well. They trained hard and the juniors showed the adults how to do it and there could be some great prospects for the future."

The club was presented with a samurai sword by Grand Master Don Fadden from the US for having the most entries from a single trainer. The sword was handed to Tashi Sensie Mike Ashton as recognition for his organisational work for the trip.

The Monarch club - based at Tara Leisure in Shaw - is affiliated to UKMAR and TY-GA. Anyone interested in trying ju jitsu can contact Keith Turner on 01706 299430.
