Roytonians’ exit

SECOND division Roytonians produced a brave performance against first division champions Shadoos, going down to a five-wicket defeat with a depleted side.

With three players unavailable, Roytonians gave the Gatley-based side a real scare, having posted a formidable 163-7 and reduced them to 50-4 off 13 overs before a gritty stand of 105 between experienced pair Raffiq and Samii saved the champions' blushes.

The Royton side competed well when put in to bat by Shadoos with the first four batsmen taking the score to 143-4.

Openers Wayne Critchley (15) and Darren Wrigley (29) picked off the bad balls while Nick Fawcett looked particularly impressive scoring 48, including five fours and a six.

A quickfire unbeaten 18 from veteran Jeff Cassells helped towards Roytonians' respectable score despite man-of-the-match Sammi taking 3-31 with his variable medium pace.

Tight fielding and three quick wickets by paceman Paul Carr then boosted Roytonian's hopes but the Shadoos old guard, aided by some aggressive slogging, saw them home.
