Shaw secure Standard honours

TWO drop goals in an eight-minute spell gave Shaw Rhinos their first Standard Cup victory, toppling favourites Waterhead 18-16.
The men behind the victory were inspirational half-back Danny Atherton and Sean Whitehead, a veteran of nine previous finals with Saddleworth Rangers.
Whitehead's second half drop goals gave Rhinos the breathing space they required and, when Gary Walkden touched down, Shaw established a crucial eight-point lead at 18-10.
Although Waterhead replied with a late converted try from Martin Bunce, it was too late to turn the game around.
Shaw had taken an early 12-0 lead through tries from Mick Lennon and Lee Graham and two goals.
However, scores for Rory Freek and Aaron Wall, one converted by Jon Perks, brought 'Head to within two points of parity before Rhinos' fine second half showing saw them run away with the trophy in front of their jubilant spectators at Boundary Park.
