ROYTON Town and Springhead suffered mixed fortunes at either end of the Air Miles Manchester League's premier division on Saturday.
Title-chasing Town slumped to a 4-1 defeat against Atherton Town, thanks to Phil Hornby's hat-trick.
Gary Andrews added Atherton's fourth with Gareth Morris netting Royton's consolation goal.
Their slip went unpunished though as fellow challengers Prestwich Heys suffered a third straight loss in going down 2-0 at Irlam MS.
At the other end of the table, Springhead took a big stride towards ensuring their survival with a 4-0 victory over visiting New Mills.
Bobby Fulham's hat-trick made it six goals in four games, with the fourth coming from Anthony Pauls as Springhead leapfrogged their visitors.
Avro took a decisive step towards the first division title with a 3-1 win at Ashton Athletic thanks to a brace from Pete Ambrose and a third from Anthony Robinson. With Old Alts and Old Standians both losing, it proved to be a good day for the Failsworth side.
Ironically, it was Avro's neighbours Hollinwood who derailed Old Standians' charge with a 2-0 victory, while Old Alts lost 4-2 at Rochdale Sacred Heart.
