Pauls and Patterson aid relegation battle

SPRINGHEAD gave their survival hopes a real shot in the arm with a 2-0 home win over Breightmet United in the Air Miles premier division.

The game was goalless at the break but second-half strikes from Anthony Pauls and Stu Patterson secured the points for 'Head.

The result means Springhead are still rock bottom but they now lie just three points behind Elton Vale with four games in hand.

Royton Town surrendered top spot with a disappointing 4-2 defeat at Stockport Georgians.

They twice fell behind to goals from Dave Morgan and James Bowden but levelled each time through Phil Edgehill and Ian Hulme before strikes from Tim Sammons and Scott Walsh settled the matter.

Town were leapfrogged by Prestwich Heys who snatched a late winner in their 3-2 defeat of Irlam MS.

First division leaders Avro fought out a 1-1 draw at AFC Blackley.

Ian Roberts opened the scoring for Blackley before James Snowden's first-half leveller - Avro still top the division by a massive 14 points.

Hollinwood lost 4-0 at second-placed Old Atrinchiams. Dean Parkin and Ray Nevins gave Alts a 2-0 half-time lead with further goals from Chris Singleton and Jordan Mahoney confirming victory.

This weekend, Royton Town travel to Elton Vale and Springhead host Leigh Athletic.

Elsewhere, Avro are at Stand Athletic and Hollinwood travel to Swinton Town.

In division three, Hollinwood's reserves host Avro's second string while Springhead A are at Stockport Georgians A.
