Saints pay penalty as Wests win a thriller

WEST Hull kept their title challenge alive with a thrilling 24-20 win over Oldham St Anne's.

The visitors took the lead in the third minute when Chris Lee intercepted a stray pass to race 50 yards for a try converted by Wayne Harris.

From the restart, Saints second-rower Warren Druggitt snapped up Lee Charlesworth's high ball to send in Paul Garrett at the corner.

Danny Tyrell then levelled the scores with a penalty goal on 15 minutes.

West Hull introduced sub John Okul and his first touch of the ball resulted in a try for Terry Lynn with Harris adding the extras.

Tyrell landed his second penalty but some sloppy defensive play allowed Rob Wilson to evade two tackles and go in under the posts. Harris added the extras to give Wests an 18-8 half-time lead.

Saints began the second half in determined fashion and took the lead on the hour when Mick Martindale slipped the ball to Charlesworth who went in unopposed under the posts with Tyrrell goaling.

But Saints' indiscipline cost them when Druggitt was sin-binned for holding down in the tackle - Harris levelled the scores again before 12-man Saints paid the ultimate price when Lynn crossed for his second try in the corner.
