Former Owl swoops to win

STAND-IN Latics boss John Sheridan was delighted his side managed to record a win and a clean sheet against former club Sheffield Wednesday.

In recent weeks, he has bemoaned his side's ability to record a win.

However, Saturday saw Latics' second win in 14 matches courtesy of Scott Vernon's eighth goal of the season.

Sheridan said: "The most pleasing thing is that we got the right result for a change.

"I am very happy again with the performance. I thought we played well for the majority of the game.

"They made it difficult for us, they are a good team, but I think we deserved the win and were the better team.

"They had a lot of pressure in the last 15 minutes, but overall we created good chances again and I'm pleased with the lads.

"I keep telling the lads that if we keep clean sheets, defend as a team from the front and make it difficult for teams to get out against us - because we will always create chances, I believe we can score in every game.

"If we defend like that we have a great chance of climbing the table."
