Complaint at Standard exit

WATERHEAD lodged an official complaint to the Oldham League after their Standard Cup quarter-final exit at Peach Road.

Saints fielded five ex-professionals in their line-up - Mick Martindale, Jason Best, Andy Wallace, Warren Druggitt and Ryan Blake - even though the rules state that only two can play.

Waterhead captain Martin Bunce grabbed the first before ex-Head player Warren Druggitt levelled the scores.

St Anne's took the lead after the break with a Danny Kay try, goaled by Danny Tyrrell. But 'Head hit back with a 70-yard interception try from centre Aaron Wall, converted by Fitzgerald.

Former Rochdale pro Wallace then set up a try for Blake - converted by Tyrrell - to give Saints a 10-16 lead.

A Fitzgerald penalty goal reduced the deficit once more but Saints soon wrapped up the victory.

Martindale and Best set up a position for Blake to score the final try and, with Tyrrell again adding the conversion, the result was not in doubt.

Whether it stands as the final outcome, of course, is now a matter for league officials to decide.

  • HIGGINSHAW and Shaw Rhinos also secured their semi-final places with victories over Hollinwood and Langworthy respectively. Saddleworth Rangers had a bye.
