Oldham put poor Park to the sword

OLDHAM RUFC outplayed Broughton Park to run in nine tries at Manor Park and make it five games unbeaten.

The visitors took the lead after five minutes through an unconverted Peter Oakes try but Oldham's pack was on top thereon with the forwards - led by Dave Worrall and Walter Schumba - dominating play in the scrum and taking 10 against the head.

A break by full back Zander Claassen saw Marlon Miller score in the corner on 13 minutes but the joy was tainted by a knee injury that meant Claassen had to be replaced by Pete Scrivens.

Nine minutes later, second rower Paddy Farnan crashed over from Dave Worrall's tap penalty for a try converted by Martin Fitton.

Prop forward Guy Barlow then finished off a set move at a line-out, coming around the front to crash over. Five minutes later, skipper John Webster finished Worrall's blindside run for another converted try to give Oldham a commanding 24-3 half-time lead.

Two minutes after the break, Broughton scored their final points with a try through Tom Prentice, converted by Oakes before Oldham seized control again.

On 50 minutes, Mike Coates finished a break by sub Scrivens with Fitton adding the extras.

Miller was then tackled just short of the line before Kiwi hooker Peter Johnson bullied his way over to extend the lead to 36-10.

On 63 minutes, Worrall nipped around the blindside of a scrum and beat three men to cross again.

Five minutes later, Worrall again surged forward, feeding Webster and then Scrivens, who also converted his own try.

With five minutes remaining, back row forward Ross Copper crossed in the corner to cap a fine victory over mid-table Broughton that confirms Oldham have now found their feet at this level.
