Eagles to swoop for in-demand Dowie?

5/11/2003

CRYSTAL Palace are the latest club to be linked with Latics' boss Iain Dowie.

Eagles' chairman Simon Jordan dismissed manager Steve Kember and assistant Terry Bullivant following Saturday's 5-0 defeat at Wigan.

Senior professional - the former Manchester City and Welsh international defender - Kit Symons has been placed in temporary charge at Selhurst Park.

Names also said to be in the running are Steve Cotterill, Graham Rix, Bryan Robson and Stan Ternent.

Dowie, who briefly played for Palace in 1995, remains non-committal on the subject.

He said: "All I will say is that I played for Palace and had a great time there. I was only there for about six months but I played in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and we had a crowd of about 28,000 there before going on to be beaten by Manchester United in the semis.

"It's a huge club, probably the biggest in South London, even though Millwall and Charlton won't think so. I can't really comment about what has happened.

"I know Steve Kember - he's a good lad and it's always disappointing when a fellow manager loses his job - but I have enough to worry about here and it's not for me to comment."

Since buying the club for £10m in May 2000, chairman Jordan has parted company with managers Steve Coppell, Alan Smith, Steve Bruce, Trevor Francis and now Kember.
