THE first Greensome Stableford of the Manchester Alliance winter season at Styal saw the first tough conditions for several months as players had to battle with strong winds and persistent rain.

The top pro am team was David Brunton of Ringway and Richard Singleton of Didsbury who worked hard to accumulate 36 points.

They finished a point clear of former Alliance captain Mike Hollingworth (Denton) and Craig Oakes of Ashton-under-Lyne who pipped new MEN champion Jon Cheetham of Mobberley and Paul Thompson (Northenden) on a card play-off.

Swinton Park's big-hitting duo of Jimmy O'Reilly and Frank Massey posted 38 points to win the am am.

Brookdale captain Stuart Meakin and Lewis Marland (pictured) were next in with 37 with Leigh's Peter Chesworth and Tom Murray third on 35.

Local golfers, particularly those involved in golf societies, are being given the opportunity to sample the treats of Irish Golf thanks to a series of events run by Dave Houghton of Leisure Golf.

Dave is staging a series of 'Golf in Ireland Roadshows' in the North West for golf party organisers, golf club Mr 'Fixit's' golf society committee members - or indeed anyone thinking of a break in Ireland.

These include a complimentary round of golf and pint of beer plus hotpot followed by the holiday road show in the evening at the clubs.

Dave said: "It's a great way to have an enjoyable day and find out about golf breaks in Ireland.

"The evening shows will include a welcoming drink and a free draw for a prize holiday for two people in Ireland which includes car ferry, accommodation with B and B and two rounds of golf on different courses.

"We still have few places left for golf at Crewe on November 11 and at Didsbury on November 13."
