Hibbert prepares for lightweight tilt

29/10/2003

MICHAEL Myers is perhaps not the best name to be calling out around Halloween but try telling that to Oldham lightweight Gary Hibbert.

After beating Anthony Maynard convincingly at the MEN Arena on the Michael Brodie v Injin Chi bill, Gary has now set himself up for a crack at the Commonwealth lightweight title, currently held by none other than Michael Myers from Kenya.

Gary has been promised a shot at the title by his manager Barry Hearn and by beating Birmingham-based Maynard, he has now put himself in the prime position.

Matchroom Promotions have said the fight will more than likely take place this side of Christmas and hopefully somewhere in the U.K.

"Hopefully the fight will happen sooner rather than later" said Hibbert who is chomping at the bit to get his hands on the Commonwealth belt.

Gary's trainer Bob Shannon is happy with his fighters progress.

He said: "Now Gary has something to focus on he is really buckling down in the gym and training harder than ever. No matter how spooky this Kenyan is he isn't going to get in Gary's way."
