Werneth maintain pressure on leaders

WERNETH moved up to third in the Central Lancashire League with an easy six-wicket win at bottom-club Stand.

Batting first, Stand made a dreadful start with three top order batsmen all dismissed without scoring. An innings of 58 from David Jones steered them to a more respectable total of 150 but Werneth's batsmen had few problems in wrapping up the match inside 24 overs. Alan Durose top-scored with 60 and there were good supporting knocks from Don Errock (39) and Sajith Fernando (27). Earlier, overseas amateur Shaun Perris shone with the ball for Werneth, taking 4-37.

Crompton secured a valuable win over local rivals Royton to lift them above Norden and Unsworth in the table. Tom Whittle's 82 helped them on their way to 228 all out while Royton's Guy Lovell returned figures of 6-112. Royton's reply began well before a middle-order collapse saw them limp to 179-8.

However, Royton grabbed a Wood Cup semi-final berth with a 62-run triumph at Werneth. On a good batting pitch, the visitors posted 259-8, Matthew Ward with 61 and Dion Taljard 86. Werneth were 85-1 when rain brought a premature close to proceedings on Sunday evening. Skipper David Ainsworth quickly fell and only professional Sajith Fernando's 58 worried the Royton bowlers unduly on Monday.

Crompton slipped to a seven-wicket defeat against Middleton.
