The bell tolls for North Stars

23/ 4/2008

THE first competitive baseball game in the borough for over 50 years saw Oldham North Stars beaten by a rampant Bolton side in their British Baseball Federation AA North match last Sunday.

They went down 32-5 in the first game as Bolton pitcher Bell restricted the home side to only three hits while striking out 14 during five innings of work.

The Oldham pitching staff of Sydall, Schrader and Anderton had no answer and the Bolton bats did not cool off until the fourth innings, but the damage was done by then.

None of the North Stars’ runs came off the bat as errors from Bolton accounted for each one.

That defeat was followed by a 28-7 loss in game two as Bolton amassed 23 runs in a disastrous opening spell for the North Stars whose pitchers, Sydall and Anderton, were chased from the game by the Bolton bats without making an out.

North Stars recovered their composure though as relief pitcher Fraser restricted Bolton to five runs in the remainder of the game.

However, North Stars did register two home runs through Creelman, in the first innings, and Fraser who blasted a two-run shot in the third.

Next up for North Stars is a home inter-league double header against Midlands side Leicester Blue Sox this Sunday at Royton and Crompton School (noon start).
