Second spot on the horizon

9/ 4/2008

WERNETH A require only three points to ensure they will finish runners-up behind Glodwick in division one of the Oldham and District Table Tennis League.

They beat their B side 9-1, keeping them ahead of BAE A who drew againmst Hollinwood A.

Promoted clubs Werneth C and Wardle make an immediate return to division two, losing 8-2 to Werneth C and 10-0 to Hyde YMCA A respectively.

A 10-0 whitewash of Hollinwood C saw First Transport seal the division two title, leaving Unison A and Rosehill B to battle it out for the runners-up spot.

Both sides were victorious last time out, Rosehill winning 9-1 at Coldhurst A and Unison 7-3 at Honeywell Lane A.

Gilders A, who had been promoted last season, were relegated after going down 9-1 at Hollinwood E, while Pennine should be safe after defeating Werneth D 8-2.

Division three winners Coldhurst B whitewashed closest rivals Grotton B, Coldhurst D prevailed 9-1 against Honeywell D, while Owls A went down 6-4 in their mid-table match against Coldhurst C.

The top two in division four, Saddleworth CC and Deaf Club, played out a hard-fought draw which leaves Saddleworth requiring two points from their final match to become champions and Deaf Club assured of second spot.

Owls B won 6-4 against Honeywell E while Werneth F triumphed 7-3 in their match with Failsworth D.

The Lancashire and Cheshire League sees Oldham ladies face Manchester Ladies in the final of the Mabel Neary Cup, while Oldham Veterans play Preston Veterans with the winners collecting the Dennis Smith Trophy. Both matches are at Horwich's Hilton Centre tonight (Thursday), starting at 7.30pm.

MEMBERS are reminded that this year’s presentation evening is at Smokies hotel on Friday, May 16.
