Learn from the Masters

9/ 4/2008

SADDLEWORTH Rangers will break new ground on Sunday when the club stages the country’s first Masters Rugby League tournament.

The event, which enjoys great popularity in Australia and New Zealand, is a non-competitive version of the sport for people aged over 35.

Six teams will take part in exhibition matches at Shaw Hall Bank Road on Sunday ahead of a new league which will be launched in May.

Former Great Britain loose forward and Rangers chairman Terry Flanagan said: "It’s a real honour for our club to be chosen to launch this sport.

"It’s massive down under and we think there’ll be lots of enthusiasm for it here from guys who fancy turning back the clock and seeing if they’ve still got it.

"It’s just a great way of keeping fit without struggling to get out of bed the day after. You may even see the Flanagan shimmy if a gap opens up."

The sides involved at Sunday’s tournament will be Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria, Scotland, the North East and Students.
