OLDHAM chairman Chris Hamilton has again asked the public to get behind the cash-strapped club.

Having paid off the rest of the £75,000 originally due on August 31, Mr Hamilton said every penny was vital.

He said: "We just hope that people realise that me and Sean (Whitehead, co-owner) are still batting our corner and we need more people to get on board."

The next payment is due in November which will be part-funded by Club 180 - it was hoped that would raise £50,000 but so far, around £14,000 has been generated.

Away from finances, the Roughyeds have received a number of applications to replace Gary Mercer as head coach.

The deadline for applicants is September 28 after which interviews will be carried out before Mr Hamilton sets out on his fundraising 345-mile bike ride.

Half the money raised will go to the club's survival fund with the remainder to Breakthrough breast cancer charity.

With fundraising continuing, the club is urging people to attend forthcoming functions at the social club.

Saturday is the players' award night, starting at 7.30pm. Entry is £4 for adults and £2 for children. A race day takes place on Sunday, starting at 1pm.

Finally, Buzz Hawkins will perform on October 22. Doors open at 7.30pm with entry £10 for adults and £5 for children.
