Saturday’s a fun day for family to support the Roughyeds

27/ 7/2005

ROUGHYEDS' supporters raised over £700 in their fight to keep the club alive by holding a family fun day at Melrose Playing Fields on Saturday.

Taking centre stage were a collection of fans who faced Hollinwood at Fields New Road, putting up an honourable display before losing 28-2 and accumulating the usual bumps and bruises.

People of all ages enjoyed the day which climaxed with a social night back at the Roughyeds' Alfred Street social club.

Event spokesman Neil Dudley said: "It went really well. We weren't bothered how much we raised, just as long as we raised something for the club.

"It was a hard game but for a bunch of fans who have never really played, everybody played well."

The plan now is for the supporters' team to play curtain-raisers against fans of other clubs, hopefully before Roughyeds games in the future.
