ROUGHYEDS’ coach Steve Deakin has given his players the week off following the end of the regular season in Co-operative National League Two.
Having concluded the campaign with a 40-16 victory over Workington Town last Sunday, Oldham are without a game until Sunday, September 14.
This weekend sees no rugby league teams in action because of the Carnegie Challenge Cup final, while the following Sunday sees the first round of the play-offs.
Oldham do not come into the play-offs until round two, when they host the fourth-placed side – either Doncaster or Keighley Cougars – with the winners advancing straight to the Grand Final at Warrington Wolves’ Halliwell Jones Stadium on Sunday, September 28.
The losers will get a second chance of reaching finals day by meeting the overall winner of the games involving those sides who finish between fifth and eighth in the table.
An enforced break will allow Deakin’s injury-hit squad time to recover with Mick Nanyn expected to have the cast removed from his broken thumb on September 4.
Deakin said: "We can give people time off to give their bodies and minds a break, then start training next week knowing we haven’t got a game. It’s the first weekend since January that’s free. Hopefully, we can come back refreshed, physically and mentally, because we’re now into the realms of the play-offs. We have home advantage and three weeks to prepare for the game. It’s down to us to use that time well and the players have to accept the responsibility, which I’m sure they’ll do."
