A gutsy win

13/ 8/2008

OLDHAM chief executive Chris Hamilton paid tribute to the club’s walking wounded after the Roughyeds’ 18th consecutive home victory.

Last Sunday’s 34-22 victory over Barrow Raiders at Boundary Park moved Oldham level on points with the Cumbrians in the chase for the second automatic promotion spot.

Oldham’s victory was achieved despite an injury list featuring the likes of Marcus St Hilaire, Mick Nanyn and Phil Joseph, while Paul O’Connor was forced into playing after Adam Robinson reported for action with a knee injury.

Mr Hamilton said: "It was a gutsy victory but very frustrating we did not stop them from scoring a bonus point because I think we deserved to win the game and given our injury situation.Nearly everybody is nursing bumps and bruises, so Tuesday’s training was called off because only eight people could run!"

Having called upon the home supporters to get behind the team, Mr Hamilton and Oldham coach Steve Deakin saw their side extend the club’s perfect home record in 2008, making the best of any Oldham side for 18 years.

Mr Hamilton said: "I didn’t realise it was that long. It’s a fair old achievement and unlike any other club in the game, it includes wins for home matches played at Sedgley Park as well, which is another tribute to the lads and coaching staff."
